The ring, said to have been operating about two years, sold the reworked doilies for $2 to $4 each to restaurants and saloons.
Three of the nine - Hosie Taylor, 21, a shipping clerk, and Miss Lillian Whitelow, 24 both employees of the Selfix Products company, were arrested when they left the Selfix plant with boxes of doilies At the same time, Lorenzo Miller, 24, was picked up, while he was waiting for his two partners in a nearby car. They were charged with grand larceny.
Taylor told police the doilies were to be delivered to six apartments which had been converted into workshops. The police swooped down on the apartments and confiscated 54,000 doilies, valued at about $10,000.
Arrested in the raid on the apartments, and charged with receiving stolen property, were Helen Riddles, 22; his brother; Purbis, 23; Paul Taylor, 19; Albert Lockridge 35; Mrs. Alice Ferguson, 41; and Eugene Williams, 33.
