ENGLAND AND IRELAND

The people in parts of Ireland and England are said to be in great distress, and owing to the failure of the second potato crop, in the county of Kerry, the people are on the verge of starvation. It appears that of 7,000 persons in Brandon and its neighborhood, 3,000 were in a state bordering on starvation, and 1,000 utterly destitute. Brandon is a market town in Suffolk, England, with a great trade in malt, coal, &c. Why are the laborers in these fertile regions doomed to this degradation and distress? Let the splendors of a monarchy answer. A greedy clergy and a cormorant nobility can tell. All this wretchedness is brought about to keep up a breed of kings and noblemen, who riot in every luxury and excess-who are so much at a loss how to spend their time, that they have recently revived the ancient amusement of "Tilt and Tourney." When will the Christian world perceive the odiousness of grinding the people to the dust, in order to gaze upon the pomp and vanities of aristocratic folly? Will it not excite the "special wonder" of the thinking men of Europe, that in our own happy country, where our institutions secure the blessings of equal rights to all, there should be found such a thing as Federalism, seeking to subvert the rights of the many, that the few may enjoy the idle pageants of the European nobility? The intelligence of England say to us "We will follow in your footsteps, you have the secret of Government, which bestows its blessings alike on all." No, say our Federal Whigs, "Yours is the best Government on earth-we admire the splendors of your court, and the 'exclusive' grandeur of your nobility-we love monopolies and exclusive privileges-we despise our vulgar Democracy, and will bring them at the 'feet of a monarch' -and will follow in the footsteps of England, whose Government is a 'most stupendous fabric of human invention.'"
