Extract of a letter to the editor of the Boston Patriot, dated Newport, Dec. 8.
The prisoner has made a confidential confession to the justices who apprehended him. That confession is still, in part, a secret— But some facts, related by him, have come to the knowledge of the public. Those facts are—He acknowledges his true name to be Thomas Daniels. He has been in your state prison four years and six days, and was committed there justly, for passing counterfeit money. He is known by other names, particularly by the name of Mr. Ray. He has been confined in Salem jail, from which he made his escape by stratagem. He has been a prisoner in Worcester jail. The mystery of the bloody silver and paper dollars, and the bloody pocket book, he says, "must have originated by his handing his bloody toes, then his money and his pocket book." The blood upon the pocket book appears (so indelible) as if it was pressed into the leather. The truth is, he relates so many stories, and the opinion of the public here is, that he is one of those evil men who perpetrated that atrocious act. He goes this day to Boston, loaded with those identical irons which he wore in your state prison. He is a man of considerable address, and quick parts—No doubt he will be identified on his arrival in Boston by many persons.
