Full Text

PHILADELPHIA, November 7.

FORGED LETTERS.

The shameless conduct of John Rutledge in the affair of the forged letters, has been attempted to be covered over by an address to him by a number of persons at Newport. The custom of addressing has been heretofore considered as suited only to public occasions. Had Mr. Rutledge been a governor of a province, the commander of a cohort, or a judicial character of his circuit, there might be some appearance of consistency in the act; but Rutledge went to Rhode-Island and intrigued, and was publicly detected in a transaction, base and ignominious in itself. Not to let the odium rest on Rutledge singly, it was determined to divide the reproach, to spread the shame over as large a surface as possible; this was to be done by an address. We have sent for the copies of the forged letters, and shall publish them as soon as received.
