From the CONNECTICUT Gazette, of May 13.
To the Army now inlisting for the Invasion of Canada.
MY Heart beats at the thoughts of your, Dear Countrymen,
to jeopard their Lives in the high Places of the Field,
for the Honour of their King, and the Safety of their
Country.—Go, like noble Heroes, with Eyes and
Hearts lift up to Heaven; Go, and may the Lord
of Hosts, give you Success.—Mean while, we
your Brethren and Friends, through all the Land,
will bear you on our Hearts, every Day, before the
Throne of Grace.—Our ALL is at Stake; indeed it
is! and if God go not forth with You, there is no
Hope: Vain are our Fleets, and vain our Twenty
Thousand. Wilt not thou, O God! who hast cast us
off? Wilt not thou, O God! go forth with our Hosts?
Give us Help from Trouble, for vain is the Help of
Man. Let not an Oath, nor any profane Word be
heard in all the Camp; but rather Prayers and Songs
of Praise. The Army of the King of Prussia, pray
and sing Psalms, and trust in God, and fight, and
drive all before them. Go ye, and do likewise.
And no doubt I may safely promise, in the Behalf of
all the godly People in New England, that while you
are fighting for all that is dear to us in this World,
constant Prayers will like Incense arise from all Parts
of the Land, on your Account. And if our Iniquities,
(the Cry of which is gone up to Heaven) do not
prevent it, you will have Success. But if by our
continued Impenitency, we necessitate infinite Goodness
to turn against us, and deliver you a Prey into
the Enemy's Hands, we shall be guilty of the greatest
Barbarity to you, who are now so willingly offering
to venture your Lives for our sakes.
F.F.
P.S. Let all the Inhabitants of New England,
hearken to the Voice of God, and to the Voice of
our Rulers: And let us repent, and return to the
Lord God of our Fathers, with all our Hearts. It
is hard to conceive how a People can have louder
Calls to Repentance, than we now have: or be more
inexcusable than we shall be, if we continue obstinate.
till our Iniquities prove our Ruin—Come, therefore,
let us return to the Lord; for he hath torn, and he will
heal us; he hath Smitten, and he will bind us up.
