The pupils of the union schools of this city had a holiday last Tuesday for the purpose of holding a grand picnic at the Fair Grounds. They formed in line on the public square at about nine o'clock a. m., headed by the G. A. Band, and the procession on foot, numbering about eleven hundred scholars from six to twenty years of age, marched to the grounds. Besides this, there was a large number who went, before the procession started, the total number approximating fifteen hundred. In the procession each teacher marched at the head of his or her scholars, and Mr. Worley, Superintendent, led the way. A day of rare pleasure for the children was anticipated, but a heavy rain storm in the afternoon tended somewhat to mar the genuine enjoyment of the occasion.
