April 13. 'Tis said, it is proposed to erect in all the Sea-Ports in England, where his Majesty has any Docks or Yards, a School for teaching Writing, Arithmetick, Drawing, Geometry, Navigation, Gunnery, the Use of the Globes and Sea Charts; and the Children of all Seafaring Persons who serve, or have served, on Board the Royal Navy, or are employed in the White Herring Fishery, as also the Children of all Persons belonging to his Majesty's Docks and Yards, who shall reside within the Precinct or Jurisdiction of the Town or Place where such Schools shall be erected, are to have their Learning gratis, from seven Years old to sixteen, their Parents maintaining them in Meat, Drink, and Cloaths : The Masters and Ushers of such Schools are to be chosen from among such Persons as do, or have serv'd on Board the Royal Navy in Quality of Mathematical Masters, or Masters or Mates of Ships, and they are to pass their Examinations before the Commissioners of the Navy, who are to certify they are well qualified for such Employments, before they are appointed thereunto, by the Lords of the Admiralty.
