BALTIMORE, Dec. 29.—(AP)—Trial of the $75,000 libel suit of Alger Hiss against Whittaker Chambers, central figures in a Communist spy probe, was postponed indefinitely today.
Attorneys for Hiss, under indictment in New York on two charges of perjury growing out of the Communist investigation, obtained the postponement from Federal Judges William C. Coleman and W. Calvin Chesnut. Attorneys for Chambers assented to the motion for delaying the trial "indefinitely."
Hiss based his suit on a claim that Chambers' statements about him being a Communist were untrue.
