Full Text

Extract of a letter from CHARLESTOWN, August 14.

"It is reported that General Lee has sent to the northward for 10,000 men to be here by the 1st of October, it being expected that the grand fleet at New York will pay us a visit. However, I think we have very little reason to fear, as every advantageous place that could be thought of is well fortified: An excellent fort is erecting at the light house, to be mounted with 28 guns that belonged to the Aetna frigate. This fort will prevent any ships of force coming over the Bar, for none of more than 44 can come in without taking out their guns, and consequently would have to pass our fort unarmed. Fort Moultrie, on Sullivan's Island, is to be enlarged, and Fort Johnston is made into a sort of castle, having two tier of guns all round. In town there are seven batteries on the Bay, and several others behind, to prevent vessels sailing round to land their men. The town is completely entrenched, and entrenchments thrown up across the streets. The Tories are all in confinement. In short, nothing remains to complete our security but a supply of men."
