Our intelligence from Spain and Portugal continues highly favorable to the cause of freedom. We are not assured of the ultimate designs of France against those countries, but this appears to be certain, from the events of the last year, that unless Bonaparte can unite the whole physical strength of his empire against those powers, they will still preserve their independence; for, (says an elegant writer) the dominion of Spain is a stake which in all ages has been desperately contended for; but amid all the conflicts and revolutions of Europe, Spain has never been conquered. She has been partially subdued, but has never sunk under the panic of defeat. The swords of heroes has resounded upon her shield; but she has recorded her valor on the helmets of her assailants. Beaten. to her mother earth, she has risen, like Antaeus, stronger from her fall. Napoleon, the modern Tartar, may march over her territory; but never subjugate it. Every obstacle of nature, every principle of man, every hope of heaven, are in arms to oppose him. Wherever the eye turns Spain glitters. One soul is every where; one spirit breathes through all life! Virgins and wives give enthusiasm to courage, while old age and childhood lends sanctity to patriotism. The whole region is alive; above and below, on hills and in valleys, the empire is in motion. Sanguine of his fortune, the tyrant may be tempted by his intoxicated vanity, to penetrate the interior of the country. But here his royal brother. the princely Tourist, should remember, that this is the extreme bound of his geographical curiosity—the bourne from which no traveller returns.' Thus advanced, he cannot retreat. Every march will be the signal for a battle;—every encampment for a siege. The triumphs of his bulletins will be the funerals of his armies; & his realm their charnel house. Victorious monarch, here ends thy reign! thy only pæan was a dirge, thy only couriers, a banditti.
