For the Republican.

When the Honorable Benjamin Harden, and David Crockett, arrived in this city on Saturday morning, the 12th inst. they put up at the "Commercial Exchange." It was soon announced, after their arrival, that the latter intended to deliver an address to the people at 2 o'clock on the evening of that day;—but soon after that announcement, a crier was sent around to give notice that the expected speech was postponed until four o'clock.

From the celebrity which Col. Crockett had acquired, as a "coon hunter," politician, and for the numerous witty sayings and comic actions attributed to him, public expectation was on tiptoe;—every one was anxious to see and to hear the eccentric and far famed "Davy Crockett;" and therefore, it need not be wondered at, that a large concourse of people were on the ground even before the time appointed for the speech.

But lo!! When they had arrived at the place appointed, they were informed that no person was permitted to go up into the room where he was to speak, without the payment of 25 cents for the privilege.

For the honor of our species and more especially for the respect which at least ought to be demanded and insisted on, by each representative of the "sovereign people," the gentlemen in question, could not possibly have known or consented to such an imposition on the public and such a degradation of the high character with which their constituents had invested them!

What!! Our members of Congress exhibited like wild animals at 25 cents a sight "shame where is thy blush?"

Main Argument

it is shameful and degrading for congressmen benjamin harden and david crockett to allow a 25-cent admission fee for the public to hear crockett's speech, as it treats representatives like wild animals on exhibit and imposes on the sovereign people.
