In a Paris Journal of the 12th March, appears disclosed in positive terms, the motive to peace with this country on the part of France. As the war is growing general and the aspect of their affairs becoming more and more serious, they begin to think that in a multitude of enemies there is danger, and to "feel the necessity" of shewing a "certain degree" of condescension towards neutral powers. Thus, then, is at length disclosed, the secret so long and with so much jealousy concealed, that the enmity of America is of some consequence to the Great Nation. The ridicule they had heaped on our early efforts—her fulsome, gasconading display of her victories and her resources, had really made an impression on weak minds; and men have been found ready to say, "It is vain to resist the omnipotence of the French republic." The delusion is past, and it is proved. that we can maintain our independence and our liberties even against the Great Nation. She confesses herself, that our enmity has something troublesome in it, and could she reverse habits to which she has been inured by long practice, would perhaps from the mere principle of selfishness, again enter into the bands of fraternity with us. It is the point of time, however, on which her apprehensions respecting us depend, and an opposition to her all-grasping rapacity, which might now be effectual; too long delayed, would excite only her ridicule and her contempt. God grant that we be not deceived!
