Piedmont, W. Va., June 19.-Fourteen machinists and four boiler makers at the Baltimore & Ohio shops were indefinitely furloughed this week. This makes about 40 men put off recently. The Piedmont Pulp and Paper Company laid off twelve wood peelers this week, on account of a surplus supply of wood. They are putting in a machine to peel the wood, and an arrangement to carry the wood from the yard to the peeling and clipping machines. R. C. Chaffe of Hambleton has purchased the shingle saw mill of W. A. Mason, at William, Tucker county, which he will operate to its fullest capacity. He will move his store to that place. All the saw mills along the line of the West Virginia Central are running full time, and several of them are working night and day on account of a rush of orders. The lumber business is reported as quite brisk. The Mackie Lumber Company of Piedmont will ship a large quantity of lumber to Europe this summer, the low freight rates making it possible to secure paying prices in that country. Harry B. Buxton, of the Davis Coal and Coke Company, left today for New York, from whence he will sail on the 22d for Europe to spend two months. E. E. Price, of Grafton, accompanied him. The coal and coke trade in this section has been rather quiet this week. Over 8,000 acres of land near Oakland, Md., have been leased, and test wells for oil and gas will be put down.
