Editors Herald:
There is not always that fitness of things one might desire, and this is a case in point: Here is the finest of lands, water plenty, a climate that invites one to plant every month in the year, and yet we have no vegetables to eat, Potatoes at stores—from California or Utah—6c. per pound, but no tomatoes, beets, carrots, turnips or onions to be bought; not a "roasting ear" have we seen; cucumbers non est; and yet all these may be had for the raising if there was anyone to do it—but everybody is altogether too busy to attend to the little things; melons will grow without attention and so they are abundant. To-day, by invitation, we visited M. Hayden's garden, a nice plot of ten acres of ground, fenced by a thrifty hedge of Osage orange. The peach and fig were crowned with fruit—the orange, lemon and pomegranate were verdant with fresh foliage: the watermelon flourished: purple eggs and okra had an inviting look—but that.—that was all the garden could offer to eat. and though this is the Canaan of America, we languish for the leeks and onions of a less favored land.
Judge Priest has a little farm of half a section, a mile out of town, so we walked over to inspect his patch of sugar cane. He has four acres, very good stand and now about six foot high, looking splendidly. with promise of a pile of sugar. This is the first field we have seen in the country, and feel fully satisfied on the sugar question for Arizona—and when I tell you that the Indians in this county have sold 5,000,000 pounds of wheat this year, you will conclude our bread too is assured.

Main Argument
despite the fertile land, abundant water, and year-round planting climate in arizona territory, there is a surprising lack of locally grown vegetables available, though melons, sugar cane, and wheat production show great promise.
