Harnett's Scouts
Going To Camporee

Harnett County Scout Executive Russell McLean said today that 400 to 500 scouts and explorers from the country are expected to attend a history making Camporee at Camp Durant, eight miles North of Raleigh.

The Camporee will be held at Camp Durant on the weekend of April 30.

Many of the troops in the county are already making plans to attend the event, McLean pointed out, and others are expected to do so before time to leave.

Chris Hamlet, Home Security Life Insurance executive of Durham, will serve as Camporee "Chief" for the three-day, 12 county event, embracing towns from Fayetteville to Henderson, and a scout population of 9,000. The attendance is expected to be the largest in scout history in North Carolina.

Hamlet, chairman of the Council Camping Committee, will be assisted by some fifty chairmen of district operating committees and the entire 12-man Occoneechee Council professional staff.

Contingents of Explorers, Scouts 14 years and over, will serve as judges for Scoutcraft events, first aid workers, and demonstrators of Scouting skills such as lashing, bridge-building, and signalling.

Scouts and their leaders will arrive at Durant Friday afternoon, check in and be assigned a camp site, each Patrol camping in a small area which will be drawn by lot.

Districts will be allotted space in a similar manner and all Units from a district will camp as "neighbors".

Chairman of the Health and Safety Committee for the Camporee is Dr. C. T. Wilkinson of Wake Forest. Chairman of Campcraft Judging is Jim Wallace of Chapel Hill. Each Camporee committee will be assisted by adult volunteers from the district organizations.

Patrols will be scored on such items as setting-up camp, cleanliness, efficiency of organization, menus, cooking technique, and final clean-up and inspection. Patrols with superior scores will be awarded blue ribbons.

Outdoor services for Scouts of all faiths will be held on Sunday morning, and the Camporee will then close after the awards are made.
