Full Text
For the Virginia Argus.
Lines on the Death of an Infant three years old.
Sweet Babe! how oft did thy infant smile
Chase from thy Mother's brow each gath'ring care;
When sorrow came, thou wou'dst her sting beguile,
And witch to hope and joy each moment drear.
Fond in rapid eagerness she'd often view
Those lineaments to future genius true,
And hope with maternal rapture join'd,
Would brightly picture all she wish'd to find:
And fancy too wou'd make the prospect glow
In colors rare as Heaven's aerial bow.
But alas! what avails that cheering time;
What but bubble, are mortal hopes sublime!-
Lewis is no more! gone beyond the sky,
Far distant from the ken of human eye;
Fled beyond life's cold moans & gone to rest
And now a Cherub lives among the blest.
Sweetest Cantlen! still shall memory dwell
To vibrate each accent on my ear,
That from thy smiling lips in softness fell,
And stamp upon my heart thy image dear.
