Injured Farm Girl Dies

SALT LAKE CITY, (AP) - Scalping victim Christine Hayes died today.

The 12-year-old eastern Idaho girl was scalped Monday when her hair was caught in a potato digging machine.

Only a small heart-shaped patch of skin was left on her face. Ripped off with the scalp were her ears, cheeks, lids of the right eye, eyebrows, skin along the jawbone and neck.

Only Thursday doctors told of how well she was progressing after a six-hour operation Monday night at the Latter-Day Saints Hospital.

A spokesman for the hospital here said she possibly died from heart failure due to shock. Another possibility could have been brain damage.
