NEW YORK, June-(CNA) The New York American, one of the principal newspaper properties of William Randolph Hearst, Negro hater and fascist, ceased publication this week, barely two years after the launching of a determined boycott by anti-fascists and other supporters of American democratic ideals against the Hearst publications.
Announcement by Hearst that The American would cease publication was hailed here by progressives of both races as the most serious defeat the fascist publisher has suffered in his fifty years as a publisher.
Employees of the newspaper, indignant that they had not received prior warning, held an impromptu meeting and called on the Newspaper Guild of New York for help. Employees of the Evening Journal and the Daily Mirror, two Hearst publications in this city, are said to be backing the fired American employees, numbering 2,800.
It has been known for some time that the Hearst publications were losing circulation and advertising revenue as a result of the powerful boycott movement. Three months ago, Hearst Publications, Inc., owner of ten of the Hearst newspaper properties, tried to get permission from the Securities and Exchange Commission to unload on the public $22,500,000 debentures of the company. The issue, however, has not been approved by the SEC and has continued publication this week. The papers made a merciless attack upon Father Divine and his followers.
