A New York correspondent says: General regret is expressed here at the failure of the Bismarck-Thiers armistice, and journals that have heretofore been applauding the heroism of the French, are now disposed to reproach them for not improving the opportunity for making better terms now than they are likely to get hereafter, if the war is to go on.

In Wall street, the effect has been to strengthen the gold premium, and to produce the conviction all around that hostilities are to go on indefinitely.
