WITHDRAWS BIDDLE NOMINATION

WASHINGTON, (AP) President Truman Saturday withdrew the nomination of Francis Biddle of Pennsylvania, to be the United States representative of the United Nations economic and social council.

Mr. Truman at the same time nominated Willard L. Thorp of Connecticut, now assistant secretary of state for economic affairs, for the post.

The White House said the action was taken at the request of Biddle, whose nomination has been held up since it was first submitted to the Senate, for confirmation last Jan. 29.

The nomination of Biddle, former attorney general under the late President Roosevelt, encountered heavy opposition from Republican members of the Senate.
