Full Text

It is a matter of some importance to know why McDonald and Avery, who have been found guilty of complicity in the whisky frauds, have not been sentenced. Joyce was hustled off to the Missouri Penitentiary with marvelous celerity, but McDonald remains in comfortable apartments at the St. Louis jail, and Avery is traveling about the country, after giving a bond for a small amount. These facts, taken in consideration with the abrupt dismissal of Henderson as soon as Babcock was indicted, and the delay in the trial of Babcock himself, make it appear that the Federal judiciary at St. Louis is the obedient servant of President Grant. Why not sentence his friends McDonald and Avery as well as Joyce?
