PORTSMOUTH. At the Desire of some of the Readers of this Paper, the following Encomium is inserted, taken From the Boston News-Letter, of November 2.

To the Publisher.

An Honest Man is the noblest Work of God. Pope.

As the Principles of true Honesty, and especially the Practice of it, in whomsoever it is found, merits our highest Esteem; it would therefore be a Piece of base Ingratitude, and no small Injury done the Community we live in, should such an unparallel'd Example pass unnotic'd, as a worthy Member of Society has lately exhibited: --The Person I mean is Mr. Robert Traill late of Boston, now of Portsmouth, Merchant; who, according to his Advertisement, a few Weeks ago, came to Boston, made a proper Settlement with his Creditors, and cheerfully allowed them the Interest due upon their respective Ballances, not even excepting those who had taken Care, to indemnify themselves by seizing his Effects: -Here is such an Instance of Honesty, as I challenge a Precedent for. --This uncommon Step he was not compell'd to by the coercive Laws of his Country; but was actuated from the native Impulse of an honest Heart. -I therefore in the Name of all honest Men, heartily wish him all that Prosperity and Happiness to which his Principles give a natural Claim.

I am, Your humble Servant,
A Lover of honest Men.
