ALEXANDRIA.
TUESDAY MORNING, APRIL 27.
In consequence of some one, in the Gazette of Saturday, having denied the correctness of the remark which we made on Wednesday -- we have, personally, taken particular pains to ascertain the sentiments of many of our most intelligent, respectable and influential, citizens upon the tariff bill, and have found not one to express himself in favor of it -- and many of them do not hesitate to give their opinion that it will prove entirely destructive to the best interests of the town; and we are also well assured in the belief, by some of the most discerning and disinterested, that, at least, nine tenths of the inhabitants of Alexandria are decidedly opposed to any further restrictions on our commerce. We do candidly believe, further, that twenty sensible men cannot be found among our whole population favorable to the measure.
We will expect the editor of the Gazette, in justice to us, to publish the above paragraph -- subject to any comment which he or his correspondent may choose to make. An Alexandrian, will oblige us, if he can leave at our office the names of even ten intelligent men in the town who are known or believed to be in favor of the tariff.]
We do not know that the editor of the Herald had any right to "expect" we would copy the above paragraph: but as he seems to wish it, we have no objection to gratify him; and that without any comment of our own, further, than that we have heard some persons, how many we have not kept an exact account of, say, they thought favorably of the bill. -- As to their intelligence, we will not express an opinion, lest we should be mistaken -- not associating as much, perchance, with persons of that class as the editor of the Herald. Our correspondent may take such notice of the above article as he pleases.
