Full Text

They write from Rome the 18th of Jan. that the Pope had been very ill for some Days, so that his Life was apprehended to be in Danger; upon which the Cardinals began to enter into Cabals for the Succession; but his Holiness recover'd of his Indisposition sooner than was expected, and receiving the Compliments of the Cardinals upon that Occasion, when some of them told him, they wished he might still live long enough to enjoy St. Peter's See for many Years. The crafty old Father, who had been well informed of their Designs, answered, That he hoped he should live long enough to disappoint the Combinations and Intrigues which had been formed while he was sick; but none of the Cardinals being willing to understand this of themselves, they all took their Leave, without desiring any farther Explanation.
