The late capture of the British ship Two Friends, off Charleston Bar, by a French privateer, is made the pretext for much clamor in the federal prints against our administration--as if Mr. Jefferson could prevent the French from lying in wait for prizes off our ports, any more than Mr. Adams (with all his navy) did the British, who were pre-eminent for this insolent practice. Mr. Carpenter, the British editor of the Charleston Courier: These patriot spirits slumbered when the harbor of New-York was blockaded by the Cambrian, whose commander has been promoted by his detestable government for his outrages on the American coast! speaking of this subject and with some provocation to be sure, in the heavy loss sustained by his English friends, commences a philippic against our executive in this modest and appropriate manner: "I wish that ********* [Jefferson] was in chains in Tripoli instead, of Captain Bainbridge, lieut. Osborne, and the other brave fellows who are in slavery there." Luther Baldwin was fined and imprisoned for wishing that the wad of a gun had hit Mr. Adams.
