General Gordon Honored by Joe Shelby Camp—Addresses by Able Speakers.
A good crowd gathered at the Methodist church yesterday to join with Joe Shelby Camp U. C. V. in doing honor to the memory of General John B. Gordon. The veterans who wore the gray, as well as some who wore the blue, occupied front seats, some of them in the uniforms worn in the days of bloody conflict. It was an impressive scene.
The services were opened by singing "Rock of Ages," after which Rev. Grogan offered prayer. The congregation then sang "Nearer my God to thee." Rev. J. B. Boen, who conducted the services, then presented Rev. Grogan, himself a Confederate Veteran, as the first speaker. He spoke about thirty minutes, telling of the South at the beginning of the war, tracing the career of General Gordon as soldier and statesman. He paid a high tribute to the great general, as one who served his country with distinguished honor, playing the part of a patriot in every walk of life.
After this address, a quartet sang "Savior Pilot Me," and then Rev. Boen spoke. He drew a beautiful picture of home life in Dixie before the war. It was no wonder that the men of the South went to war in the defense of their homes and of what they believed to be their rights. His address was full of fine sentiments and produced a very strong impression. The services were closed with the benediction by Rev. G. H. Ray.
