One of the measures confessedly intended for the ensuing Session of Parliament, to be proposed by the Minister or his friends, is a sale of the Crown Lands; but before such a measure is suffered to take place, it may be necessary to ascertain how they are parcelled out, and who are the buyers. Let there be no job, no gimcrack work, Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer. If the public benefit is intended, let the lots be small and numerous, and the sale public and by auction.
The liberality of the principles which dictated the junction between Mr. Fox and Lord North, appears in every instance of their public conduct. No opinion has been sacrificed by it; no declaration has been retracted. Thus their different opinions of the subject of the Parliamentary Reform has not interfered with their unanimity; and the same will speedily be the case, in the discussion of the Commercial Treaty with France; as Mr. Fox approves of it generally in a commercial point of view, but condemns its political tendency; whilst Lord North is equally hostile to its effects on our policy and our commerce.
The anxiety of the Minister respecting the success of his most favorite measures in the ensuing session, appears evidently in the exertions he is making. He is himself engaged in feeling the pulses of the monied men in the city respecting the new loan: whilst Dr. Prettyman is employed in writing the most pressing letters to solicit the early attendance of the country Members. For this purpose he soothes and promises them with all the plausibility of his pupil; but what is still much more singular, he very truly tells them, that their attendance will be extremely necessary.
