"By a gentleman from Lexington, we hear, that news has been received there, that a trader from that neighborhood has been mobbed in South Carolina and in resisting the attack made upon him, has killed and wounded some of the assailants. The particulars, so far as we could learn them, are to this effect; Mr. Turnbull, a respectable citizen of Fayette county, was in South Carolina, with a drove of horses and mules for sale; having reached a certain village, (the name or position of which we did not learn) and finding no sale there, he proceeded on. The people acting under the excitement produced by the anti-tariff proceedings, determined to turn him back towards home. A number of them waylaid him at a bridge, attacked his drove on the bridge, and forced some of the mules off the bridge into the river. Mr. Turnbull, it appears, was armed, and did not fail to resist. He fired upon the assailants, killed one, and wounded one or two more. He had been arrested, and committed to jail, to await a trial. His drove was dispersed. We trust he will not be found to have violated any law of South Carolina. At all events, if the above is a correct account of the affair, his conduct will not be disapproved by his own countrymen."
