DEATH-BED
REPENTANCE
OF
A
GIRL FROM CALIFORNIA

We copy as follows, from the
Portland Bulletin, of October 29:

If you look at this world from different stand points what a world of
utter misery does it contain. Take
for instance the women of the streets;
who, as they pass along jest and
laugh as though no trouble or sorrow
was theirs and life as light as a
summer day. But even in the irreparable
wrong into which many a
fair young girl falls, by their own
waywardness or the wiles of the seducer,
with them sick and broken-hearted,
and the mood of their soul
in the depth of dark despair, as the
sequel will show. On Sunday
morning Belle Martin, a courtesan
in a house of ill fame kept by John
Joachim, on I Street, between
Second and Third streets, known as
the Diamond Saloon, was found dead on
her knees at her bedside, with her
arms and face resting upon the bed,
as if in the attitude of prayer. For
the last week she had been continually
drunk, and resorted to the still
more nasty and filthy habit of chewing
snuff which she used in the greatest
excess. During Saturday she complained
of being sick but no notice
was taken of it until that night,
when Dr. Everett was called and
prescribed medicine for her. About
two o'clock in the morning a noise was
heard in her room, and Mrs. Joachim,
the wife of the proprietor, went into
it and found her out of her bed and
reclining against it, when Mrs. J.
put her back to bed again and returned
to her room. About five o'clock
that morning the screams of another
inmate of the house awoke them all
who discovered her upon her knees,
cold in death, by her bedside. The
history of this unfortunate is known
by but one person in this city, who
informs us that at one time she was
well off, living in Yolo county, Cal.
She fell in an unfortunate moment
in Sacramento, and leaves in that
city four children, who are being
raised by a distant relative, but have
refused to ever see her more and
have anxiously hoped for her death.
We will draw the curtain and point
to the moral of the story of the
streets.
