Cases In Week
WASHINGTON - (ANP) - The United States Supreme Court began its 1958 session with a "bang." During the first two weeks it disposed of nearly 500 cases which were pending on the docket when it convened.
At the end of the first week around 400 orders were issued, about 300 of which were disposed of by the court's refusal to grant hearings.
The second week marked ruling on approximately 60 cases, of which nearly 60 appeals were denied. The court heard approximately 25 cases during a two-week period and handed down only one printed opinion. It swore in a new Justice and permitted more than 250 attorneys to practice before the high tribunal.
On Monday, the 20th, the Chief Justice issued an order authorizing the retired Justice Reed to perform judicial duties in the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia District beginning on that day and ending June 20, 1959, and for such further time as may be required to complete unfinished business.
