Horses Submerged In Swamp

Two horses being used to draw wood from the swamp of the Phoenixville CWA job, where two local boys are employed, suddenly sank almost out of sight in a bog about a hundred yards from the edge of the swamp last Friday morning. Although the lowlands have been frozen over for some time, the two animals placed their hoofs on a weak spot in the ice and simultaneously became helplessly mired. Workers were successful in soon extricating the animals, but a sharp-pointed three-inch stub of a small tree that had been cut down a few days before, pierced the stomach of one of the animals and fractured a blood vessel. A large quantity of blood poured from the inch-wide wound in the stallion's stomach before a veterinarian arrived and treated the animal.
