PIXLEY'S PATRIOTISM.
Were the editor of the Argonaut unknown in public life on the Pacific Coast his hard-hitting articles might be taken for the utterances of a Simon Pure and high-toned patriot. It would only appear singular, however, that a man of so much editorial power should confine his anti-fraud attacks within so small a sphere. Although we claim that our Government is the best the sun ever shone upon, we do not maintain that all the rogues in office may be counted on the fingers. The Argonaut hardly recognizes this wide extent of scoundrelism among the politicians of the United States. As Pixley's organ it grinds out denunciation of those aspiring citizens whom he happens to hate. It threatens President Arthur if he should favor with any crumbs the two present pet aversions of Mr. Pixley. Mr. Arthur will no doubt see the Argonaut in time to avoid giving the offense that he is warned against. On two subjects, abuse of foreigners and persecution of those political Californians whom he has not been able to make secondary to himself, Mr. Pixley's style is unmistakable. "If President Arthur appoints Mr. Sargent to his Cabinet, or gives to Black-and-Tan anything but the smallest bone, he will disappoint all those better Republicans, who now regard him with personal respect and wish well to his Administration."
