WASHINGTON, D.C., Dec. 5.—A printers' tournament took place to-day, with the following result: There were eight entries in the first class; type, nonpareil; time, three hours. The first prize, a solid gold composing stick, was won by S. N. Bennerman, who set 5,070 ems. The second prize, a solid silver composing-stick, full newspaper size, was won by R. A. McLeap, who set 4,995 ems; the third prize, Mepamin's Encyclopedia of Printing, was won by W. W. McCullum, who set 4,720 ems. In the second class—time 1 hour and 30 minutes—W. W. Maloney was awarded a silver composing-stick, newspaper size, having set 2,278 ems; Frank A. McGill, German silver composing-stick, full size, 2,250 ems; H. M. Hartman, Harpel's Typographical, 2,187 ems. In the long-primer class—time, 1 hour and 30 minutes—J. R. McBride was awarded the first prize, a solid gold composing-stick, breast pin size, he having set 2,280 ems; G. J. S. Huppicut, an "American Encyclopedia of Printing," 2,037 ems; and H. C. Turleton, a thermometer, 1,988 ems. The tournament took place in the National Republican office. The decisions were made in accordance with rules previously established, and none were present except the judges, referee, and proof readers. The tournament closed with a grand banquet to-night.
