Portland, Monday, March 4, 1800.
MR. JENKS,
It ought to be known to your customers and to the inhabitants of Maine in general, that the Honorable CALEB STRONG, Esq. is the only candidate for Governor, who will be supported by the federal interest at the next election. It is to be hoped therefore that the electors of this district, who have the interest of the federal government, as well as that of this Commonwealth, at heart, will unite in favour of the Hon. Mr. STRONG. He is personally known to but few in the District of Maine-- But those few can with confidence assure the electors, that he is a man of the first talents; remarkable for his amiable and conciliating manners; for his sound and independent political principles; spotless character for integrity and morals; and a zealous and sincere professor of religion. He has served the public in various respectable offices for more than twenty five years, the last of which was a Senator of this Commonwealth in the Congress of the United States.
He was induced to retire from this honourable and respectable station, by his love of rural life, domestic happiness and the delightful but humble pursuits of agriculture. He is perhaps the only man in the Commonwealth who will in all respects supply this place and repair the loss of the late truly excellent Governor SUMNER. While he was a member of the Senate of the United States, he was justly esteemed a man of the first influence and talents at that Board.
His popularity throughout the Western and Southern parts of the Commonwealth will insure him a universal suffrage in that quarter, and the people of Maine will certainly not be so inattentive to their interest or character, as to throw away their votes upon any candidate who will not be likely to succeed--For they may rely upon it as a fact, that all the other federal candidates have or will refuse to stand in competition with Mr. STRONG.
An ELECTOR.
