The Pope's Soldiers Suffering.—The London News, of October 27th, gives the following account of the sad condition of some of the Pope's soldiers :
The prisoners made in the last struggle between the Pope's Foreign Legion and the Piedmontese have just passed through Paris, and were encamped during their stay at the Barriere Mou parnasse. These prisoners were mostly Belgian subjects, having all the appearance of honest workmen of factories, led by fanaticism to abandon their quiet life for the sake of defending the cause which their consciences had suggested to be the right one, and for which they have proved their readiness to die. Amongst them were several Poles. These had evidently not found their way direct from the scene of action. The state of the poor fellows was most pitiable : many of them were literally clothed in sack-cloth. their whole covering consisting of a sack, through which two holes had been made for the arms, while the legs were enveloped in rags, bound together with rope. They all complained of having been gradually robbed of everything they possessed, and of suffering dreadfully from hunger. No sooner was the arrival of these five hundred helpless individuals known in that quarter, where the inhabitants would be as poor as the prisoners, if they had ever had anything to be robbed of, than the whole population turned out to the rescue, and, in a few hours, the unfortunate wayfarers were completely reclothed and restored. It was a goodly sight to behold the women and girls of the quarter hurrying to the prisoners' camp laden with bread and soup cans, with articles of clothing and bottles of wine, destined to soften the hardships of the remaining portion of the journey. The cause in which they had been fighting was entirely forgotten, and their want alone remembered
