What is this article about?
This editorial refutes the French Directory's assertion that French supporters in the US are merely denagogues seeking to overthrow the government. It criticizes their use of press liberty to shield enemies of France and analyzes a letter to Mazzei that portrays the US as ungrateful, justifying the view that 'good republicans' are pro-French allies.

Full Text
The Directory maintain that in the United States the French have for partisans only certain denagogues, who aim to overthrow the existing government.
But their impudent falsehoods convince no one, and prove only what is too evident, that they use the liberty of the press to preserve the enemies of France.
Whoever reads the letter to Mazzei with attention, must see that it encouraged the French government to stigmatize us as an ungrateful faithless nation, to declare that our true mother, France, has assured to the United States their liberty and independence, and openly to avow that by breaking off communication with us, it would afford a triumph to the friends of France in the United States.
Reader, pause and reflect upon the language made use of by the writer of the letter, and the observations upon it by the party of good republicans, the true Mother, and you will readily perceive that the former has justified the latter in saying that the good republicans here were the friends of France.
