In an article headed "Moscow," in the summary of news in this paper, we have a melancholy picture of war as exhibited in the destruction of that once famous city, which was formerly the metropolis of the Russian empire. From the statement laid before the Emperor, it appears that at the time it was taken and sacked by the French, the number of dwelling houses and shops amounted to 17,697, and when they left it, only 3,994 remained undamaged! Thirteen thousand six hundred and eighty-five houses, &c., were destroyed in one city, in a single campaign! And to this, if we add the vast amount of other property lost at the same time, together with the thousands of human beings immolated on the altar of ambition, what a horrible scene is presented to our view!!

These are the trophies of fell ambition!
These the laurels that adorn thy brow.
