Full Text

Extract of a letter from Paris, July 27.

Take the following proof of modern military valour; a soldier belonging to a regiment now in garrison in Douay, French Flanders, having for a breach of duty received sentence of two hundred strokes of a sabre (des coups de plat de Sabre) underwent the punishment with seeming unconcern, and as a file of men were reconducting him to the barrack prison, the Colonel, who by the by is a Prince, displeased at the soldier's courage, resolved to give a proof of his; he ran up to the poor man, ordered the fusileers to stop, drew his sword, and barbarously murdered the unhappy being, who had the moment before, by the punishment inflicted on him, made amends for his offence! All Paris is incensed at this unprincely, cowardly and rascally action.
