Mexican sheepherders to replace Basques, who are said to have departed for Spain in large numbers, are to be brought to northern Nevada through the instrumentality of a committee of the Nevada Livestock association, according to reports reaching here from Elko this week. It is claimed they are to come principally from Colorado and New Mexico.
An Ely man who had considerable to do with the sheep business in Arizona claims the Mexican herders there are not regarded as efficient as Basques and that the two nationalities do not get along well if thrown together. Arizona sheepmen keep them apart if they can. Arizona's Mexicans are mostly natives of that state and from old Mexico. The New Mexico Mexicans have a better reputation in every way, being more industrious and law-abiding.
