Full Text

Congress.

Congress assembled on Monday last. We have no intelligence from Washington as late as Monday.
It was very doubtful what party would succeed in obtaining the Speaker and other officers of the House. It was in the power of the Democrats, with the aid of the Southern Americans, to elect the Speaker and other officers; and there have been rumors to the effect that a union of this kind would be effected against the black Republicans—the Democrats to have the Speaker, and the Americans the Clerk.
It is also rumored that the black Republican members from New York have held a meeting and determined to vote for Hon. John A. Gilmer, of this State, for Speaker! We give the rumor for what it is worth.
The President's Message will most probably not be sent in until the House is organized. If communicated on Tuesday, we will lay it before our readers in our next issue; but if it should be delayed by a failure on the part of the House to organize, we will publish it at the earliest practicable moment after it comes to hand.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 4.
The Democratic Caucus of Members of Congress, held last night, enthusiastically nominated the Hon. Thomas S. Bocock, of Virginia, as their candidate for Speaker. The meeting was altogether harmonious.
The Republican Caucus made no nomination, but resolved that every member would vote his own choice in the House. Some of the most radical expressed a willingness to vote for John W. Forney, Esq., for Clerk, or an American, if a Republican Speaker could thus be secured.
There was a Conference of the Southern Opposition members held, but no conclusions arrived at.
