Harris, presiding. Official delegations representing the Senate and the House of Representatives, will flank the President.
The Rev. Dr. Harris opened yesterday's Senate session with a prayer expressing thanks to Divine Providence in behalf of the nation for the long years of service Taft rendered to his country. The clergyman said: "We thank thee, in a world shot through with evasion, for the robust honesty of this man to whom stubborn consistency was not always a virtue, and who was not too proud to change his attitude when some new facet of the total truth came into view."
In the House, many members arose to eulogize the man whose matchless integrity and unique political brilliance won him every honor but the presidency.
So saddened were Senators and other party leaders that there was little discussion of the political problems the death of the 63-year-old Ohioan have occasioned.
Gov. Frank Lausche of Ohio, a Democrat, has announced that he will not name a successor to Taft until the present session of Congress has ended, probably this week.
Lausche is expected to choose a member of his own party to fill the vacant seat. However, Bricker has asked the Ohio state legislature to enact a bill providing for a special Senatorial election next November.
Taft's death came one week after that of Sen. Charles H. Tobey (R) New Hampshire. Tobey's successor is certain to be a Republican.
But until the two vacancies are filled, the Senate lineup is 46 Republicans, 47 Democrats, and one Independent, Sen. Wayne Morse, Oregon. Morse, an ex-Republican, has announced that he will vote with the GOP on matters affecting organization of the Senate.
Tributes to Taft continued to flood in today from all parts of the nation and from European statesmen who often assailed his foreign policy views, but who paid profound tribute to his rock-bound honesty and intense patriotism.
Mrs. Taft, who has never fully recovered from a stroke she suffered three years ago, was reported bearing up well.
With her in the family home on a quiet, shady street in Washington's Georgetown section are her four sons, William Howard Taft III, U. S. Ambassador to Ireland; Robert A. Taft, Jr.; Lloyd Bowers Taft, and Horace D. Taft.
The door of the Taft home remained open all day. Through it passed the renowned and the humble of Washington, seeking words with which to express the feeling that the passing of Bob Taft had left a great void in the Capital city and in the nation.
