PHOENIX, July 11. (UP)—Maricopa county sheriff's deputies searched the desert in the area of the Sierra Estrella mountains 25 miles southwest of here today to find two aged prospectors who hunted gold without an adequate water supply and were lost.
Their companion, Walter W. Frank, 38, Phoenix, reached St. John's Mission at Komatke last night after a six-hour fight with excessive desert temperatures.
He said his lost companions were Harry Rush, 65, Phoenix, and Claude Layton, 60, Tempe.
They started early yesterday for a mine in a remote district south west of Komatke, leaving their automobile seven miles from its believed location and hiking across the desert with only a small canteen of water.
By mid-afternoon, as the recorded temperature climbed above 110 degrees in the summer's severest heat wave, Rush complained of thirst. Frank began to return to their car to obtain water for the two older men.
His automobile had a flat tire and became stuck in sand. Frank attempted to walk to Komatke but collapsed in a desert trail. He had crawled nearly a mile when he was found by a motorist and brought here.
Frank was able to accompany the party of searchers that left here at dawn. He said he believed he could lead the party to his companions.
