CONSERVATISM IN MEMPHIS.

The Conservatives of Memphis held a rousing meeting on Wednesday night, for the appointment of delegates to the State convention to be held in this city on Tuesday next. Speeches were made by Hon. John W. Leftwich, who, having just returned from Washington, gave a hopeful account of the cause of Conservatism throughout the country, and by Attorney General Wallace, Hon. J. W. Smith, Capt. S. C. Cameron, Mr. Darling, of Ohio, and S. T. Morgan, Esq. The utmost enthusiasm and hopefulness prevailed and a full list of delegates were appointed. The meeting took decided ground upon the subject of inviting the negroes to co-operate with us, and participate in the deliberations of the convention. Col. M. C. Gallray, editor of the Avalanche, one of the most fearless, patriotic and best abused men in the land, offered the following resolution, immediately after the appointment of delegates, which was unanimously adopted:

Resolved, That the committee have further time to select other additional delegates to attend the convention at Nashville on the 16th inst., and that the colored people of Shelby county be invited to co-operate with the Conservative party of Tennessee, and requested to hand in to the committee the names of such colored men as will attend said convention.

This brands the infamous charges that the "Rebels" of Memphis are the enemies of the negro, and exposes the vile slander that they incited the riots at that place. It puts the issue between the real and pretended friends of the colored people, just where it ought to be. The Memphis demonstration was in all respects most gratifying, and will go far towards securing a Conservative triumph in August.
