Committee Plans
Shipping Strike
Relief For Alaska

SEATTLE-- A special committee has been organized with a nucleus of Seattle citizens to work out a program of relief for Alaskan cities suffering because of the shipping strike. The Seattle Chamber has asked Thomas M. Pelly to take chairmanship of the Seattle - Alaska Lifeline Committee.

The following were named and are serving:

C. B. Lindeman, publisher of the Seattle Post Intelligencer; William K. Blethen, publisher of the Seattle Times; Warren D. Lamport, general manager of the Port of Seattle; Nat S. Rogers, vice president of Van Waters and Rogers, Inc.; James F. Hayward, administrative assistant to the president of Bon Marche; C. L. Egtvedt, chairman of Boeing Airplane Company; L. E. Karrer, executive vice president of the Puget Sound Power and Light Co. Others named include Glenn Carrington, chairman of the Chamber's Alaska division, and Dr. Donald H. MacKenzie, chairman of the Chamber's labor management division.

The function of this committee is definitely not to become involved in labor differences or to support either shipping companies or unions. The immediate objective is to get ships moving to and from Alaska, pending settlement of P.M.A. and S.U.P. negotiations.

Long-range objectives include getting policy adopted to insure uninterrupted service to Alaska. This contemplates an agreement under which there would be no Alaskan shipping tieup due to any work stoppage on the west coast.

The feeling is that the companies, in turn, must agree to make a retroactive settlement on agreement with the unions concerned.

The committee is fully conscious of vital defense factors involved and has extended to Governor Gruening its pledge of cooperation in this emergency.
