AT EAST PUTNAM LAST NIGHT
A meeting of the K. K. K. or White-hooded Order was held last evening in the vacant lot just this side of Burrell's Grove on the Providence road, near the Cutler farm and the Five Mile river.
It is reported that there were near 150 automobiles parked in the open field, mostly bearing R. I. registrations. Some from Massachusetts and a few from Connecticut.
They began to arrive about 8 o'clock. The first automobile carried a large cross on the radiator about 2 feet high and was illumined by red electric lights. Some of the other cars had smaller crosses on them.
The meeting was very orderly and farmers, who were attracted by the large number of machines, could hear cheering and clapping after several speeches were made.
The large wooden cross estimated to be about 15 feet high was seen burning for over one-half hour and embers of the order could be seen putting out sparks as they alighted on the ground.
The meeting lasted from around 8 o'clock until 10.30. This is the second meeting held in this vicinity. The first one held last fall was a little further east.
Those who attended have evidently not noticed that the Klan membership in Connecticut has dropped to about one-tenth of what it was and the treasury is empty. The same is true in other states.
