FIGHTS OCCUR
(By United Press)
London, April 9.—The cabinet was called for an extraordinary session this afternoon following the failure of Premier Lloyd George and labor leaders to reach an agreement by which the general strike, called for Tuesday at midnight, would be averted.
(By United Press)
London, April 9.—Widespread violence in connection with the strike of British coal miners was reported from all sections of the island today.
The immense government airdrome at New Castle with its complicated wireless and telegraph equipment was dismantled by insurgent strikers, and telegraph poles and wires were cut down near Shields.
Extensive incendiarism marked the course of the strike last night. Sporadic outbreaks of fighting also occurred, and houses were looted in the strike area.
With no evidence of compromise coming from the strikers, the government and coal mine owners today prepared for industrial war of long length. Army, navy and air reserves called out by King George probably will be used to replace the strikers and transportation and communication maintained.
