There is no State in the Union, the prosperity of which is more entirely dependent upon the success and stability of the American System, than New-Hampshire. Her people are emphatically a working people. They must see the operation of this system upon their prosperity—that they must inevitably fail without its aid. They have already seen the hostility of the present administration to this system, and the contest is not to be regarded with indifference. The result is to them important. They have nothing to hope from the present administration, but much to fear. On the other hand, if Mr. Clay is elected, they have everything to expect, and nothing to fear. In that case, the policy of protecting and encouraging domestic industry becomes the settled policy of the government.
The contest, then, is not a contest for men, but a struggle for the predominance of principles—principles of vital importance. These principles ever have been, and ever must be acknowledged, when understood, by the people of this State; and is not the assumption, that they will be sacrificed to prejudice and blind devotion to a man who disavows them, an unjust reflection upon their intelligence and candor. We have never yet been willing to acknowledge that the success of the Jackson party in this State, was to be attributed to any regard for his principles, but rather as evincing the gratitude of the people for a military exploit; and the existence of this respect for the man, convinces us that a superior respect for themselves, and their free institutions, and a regard for their own interests, will induce them, ultimately, to set matters right. It is, in our view, by no means certain that Gen. Jackson will receive the electoral vote of New-Hampshire, should he continue a candidate.
