A Bath in the Surf Enjoyed by Thousands—Why Redondo is Looming Up.

Personal Mention.

Redondo had her "biggest crowd of the season" yesterday, and the little seaside resort was the scene of hilarious gayety from the arrival of the first trainload of pleasure-seekers in the morning till the last had departed late in the afternoon. The day was just such a one as drives everyone into the water and the attendants at the bath house were fit subjects for Stockton when the crowd had gone. Early in the day the last dry bathing suit was given out, and then all comers had to take theirs wet or not at all. There was no time to dry them. Of course there was a good deal of kicking over this. It is bad enough to get into the wet water, but when one has to put a suit of clammy clothes on his back and walk a block before he gets to the breakers it becomes very disagreeable indeed.

However, the fact that the "wet suits only" sign was hung out early in the game, did not appear to be a deterring influence. The breakers were full of bathers all day long and those who ventured in found the water, the surf and the tide all on their best behavior.

Redondo has begun to assume the appearance of a real live resort. Two years ago Santa Monica laughed at the pretensions of the young upstart, but now the older place must get up and rustle or she will be left behind in the race. There are many reasons why Redondo is preferable to Santa Monica to spend a Sunday in. The surf is gentler and has none of the boisterousness of the breakers at Santa Monica; the bath houses are more modern and better equipped; the beach is smoother and, in fact, there is nothing nice at Santa Monica but you'll find something nicer at Redondo. It is true that the crowd is the chiefest attraction of all and that Santa Monica has it, but then crowds are fickle and it may not be very long before everybody will be going to Redondo.

The trains which ran down from this city hourly yesterday, brought crowds of people wishing to escape the heat and dust, and pass a pleasant day amid the cool and refreshing ocean breezes. The entire length of the pier on both sides was filled with ambitious anglers, all of whom were well rewarded for their trouble by the accommodating fish. The numerous vessels anchored in the bay presented an interesting sight to most of the visitors. The steamer Pelican made a trip in the afternoon, going several miles out in the ocean. The passengers reported good luck and a delightful time. Vehicles of all descriptions were busy most of the day driving persons to different parts of the beach.

The hop at the hotel Saturday evening was enjoyable and well attended. Among the number present were Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Howell, Misses Coakley and Dean, Messrs. Uthoff and Mitchell of Los Angeles.

The Redondo register was well filled yesterday, several pages being covered with names of the guests. Among them were Judge R. S. Mesick, H. H. Dance, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Frazer, Mrs. L. King, San Francisco; C. Murat, Mrs. A. Warren, New York; Dr. and Mrs. J. S. Hodge, Pasadena; W. L. Vestal, San Diego; A. J. Everest and sister, Riverside; Mrs. W. B. Clarke and sons, Kansas City; W.
