Yesterday a gentleman arrived in town, who brought the following important intelligence:
Extract of a letter from Providence, dated Feb. 10.
By a vessel just arrived at Newport, from St. Croix, in 21 days, we learn, that a squadron of French men of war had blocked up Antigua: and a detachment from the same squadron with a body of land forces, had arrived at St. Kitts, the latter were disembarked and had taken possession of the whole island, except a fort on Brimstone-hill, which was not reduced. This intelligence was brought to St. Croix by two or three British officers, who escaped from St. Kitts in a small vessel, who also report, that a British 74 gun ship, and a few other vessels made their escape, and that Basse-terre, the capital of the island of St. Kitts, by some means took fire, a part of which was reduced to ashes.
