Throughout Henderson county this season crops are good, according to information obtained by The Times-News. The early potato crop was short in many sections, but other crops are coming thru in good condition. Production will average high. With higher prices for many products than those prevailing last year, conditions with the country people are improving. They are not yet receiving for some commodities the prices the producers believe these should bring, but on the whole the farmers are doing better and their optimism is up several degrees. Their morale has improved along with the improvement in the business of farming.

The summer season in the town and county has been good or bad, according to the personal experiences of those engaged in entertaining visitors. At times during the summer there have been large crowds in Hendersonville and the county. At other times the size of the crowds has fallen off. Under the prevailing conditions, and in competition with the Chicago Fair, this section has little reason to complain about the summer's business. The fact that so many people come under unfavorable conditions is evidence of the strong drawing power of this section. The fact that they come when Chicago and many other places and sections in the country are pulling for tourist business, is additional evidence that the attractions of this section still appeal to tourists as well as our large population of summer residents.

The coding of the business of Hendersonville and this county will have but little effect on business improvement here. The few industries of the county cannot increase wages or business to the extent necessary to bring about the change in conditions which is needed. Immediate improvement in conditions may be expected in industrial centers, when wages are raised and the unemployed are given work. In this county the greatest number it is possible to employ in industry makes little impression on general business conditions. This brings this town and section face to face with the fact that our hope for improved conditions is in the nation-wide improvement of business conditions. If the NRA program is a success in the country as a whole, in the course of a year or two Hendersonville and this section may begin to cash in on the results. Until the balance of the country becomes prosperous and the people come to the mountains to spend their money, this section will obtain only minor results from going under the codes.
